Social media has transformed the ways people communicate in English, creating new opportunities for expressing opinions, emotions, agreement, disagreement, and interpersonal relationships. In these digital environments, communication depends not only on the words people use but also on how they organize their messages and signal their intentions. Discourse markers, including well, so, actually, anyway, however, and you know, play an important role in this process. Although these expressions are often considered minor elements of language, they contribute significantly to coherence, interaction management, politeness, and the interpretation of meaning. This article examines the functions of discourse markers in English social media communication from the perspective of digital pragmatics. Drawing on established theories of discourse markers and research into computer-mediated communication, the study discusses their textual, interpersonal, pragmatic, and interactional functions. Illustrative examples demonstrate how the same marker may communicate different meanings depending on the surrounding context. The article argues that discourse markers help users create more coherent, natural, and socially appropriate online interactions. Understanding their functions is therefore important for contemporary pragmatics, discourse analysis, and English language education.Downloads
