Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of the territorial, social, and cultural pragmatic functions of toponyms based on English and Uzbek language materials. The study examines the identificational, differential, deictic-orientational, socio-territorial, and cultural-symbolic functions of place names, highlighting their role in verbal communication as well as their relationship with toponymic presupposition and competence. Furthermore, the article discusses the pragmatic potential of toponyms, their realization in different types of discourse, and their theoretical and practical significance for translation studies.
