Fabricated Hadiths represent one of the most serious challenges that have faced the Prophetic Sunnah due to their negative impact on Islamic creed, legislation, and ethical values. Consequently, Hadith scholars developed rigorous methodological standards to distinguish authentic narrations from fabricated ones, aiming to preserve the Sunnah from distortion and forgery. Over time, these standards evolved into a comprehensive critical methodology based on both chain (isnād) and text (matn) criticism, supported by historical, linguistic, and juristic evidence.
This study aims to analyze the methodological criteria employed by Hadith critics in identifying fabricated narrations and to compare the approaches of classical and contemporary scholars in this field. The research adopts a descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology by examining the concept of fabricated Hadith, the causes behind its emergence, and the principal standards used by scholars in evaluating narrations. It further applies these standards to selected examples of fabricated Hadiths to demonstrate their practical implementation.
The study concludes that identifying fabricated Hadiths depends on an integrated system of methodological criteria rather than a single indicator. These include chain criticism, textual criticism, external evidence, and extensive expertise concerning narrators and narrations. Furthermore, differences among Hadith critics often stem from variations in assessing supporting evidence rather than disagreements over methodological foundations.
