The Impact of Dietary Patterns on Tooth Enamel Integrity and the Risk of Dental Caries

Abstract

Dietary patterns are an important modifiable determinant of oral health because the frequency, composition, and timing of food and beverage consumption influence the balance between demineralization and remineralization at the tooth surface. This review examines the relationship between dietary habits, tooth enamel integrity, and the risk of dental caries, with particular attention to free sugars, acidic foods and beverages, between-meal snacking, nutrient availability, and protective dietary factors. Current evidence indicates that frequent exposure to fermentable carbohydrates increases the number and duration of acid challenges generated by dental biofilms, while acidic beverages and foods may contribute directly to erosive mineral loss through non-bacterial mechanisms. Dietary patterns rich in free sugars, sweetened beverages, and frequent processed snacks are therefore associated with a less favorable oral environment, whereas balanced diets containing nutrient-dense foods may support mineral homeostasis and general oral health. Calcium and phosphate availability, adequate vitamin D status, saliva, and fluoride exposure contribute to the maintenance and repair of early enamel mineral loss, although nutrition cannot be considered independently of oral hygiene, fluoride exposure, socioeconomic conditions, and individual susceptibility. The literature also suggests that reducing the frequency of sugar exposure may be particularly important, especially in children and adolescents. Nutritional counseling should consequently form part of preventive dental care and should emphasize practical reduction of free sugars and acidic drinks rather than relying solely on total caloric intake. Overall, dietary modification represents a feasible component of a broader, minimally invasive strategy for preserving enamel integrity and reducing caries risk across the life course.
