Strategies for Enhancing the Development of Institutional and University-Based Journals in Nigeria

Abstract

Universities are established primarily to promote teaching, research, and community service. Among these core mandates, research occupies a central position because it generates new knowledge that contributes to national development, technological innovation, policy formulation, and global academic advancement. However, research only becomes valuable when its findings are disseminated through credible scholarly publications. Academic journals therefore serve as indispensable platforms for communicating research findings to scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and the wider society. In Nigeria, institutional and university-based journals have expanded considerably with the establishment of more higher education institutions. Despite this growth, many Nigerian journals continue to face challenges including inadequate funding, weak editorial structures, poor digital infrastructure, irregular publication schedules, limited international indexing, low visibility, inadequate adherence to publication ethics, and poor global competitiveness. These challenges have encouraged many Nigerian academics to publish predominantly in foreign journals, thereby limiting the development of indigenous scholarly publishing. This paper reviews the concept of Nigerian journals, their types, importance, and strategies for strengthening institutional and university-based journals. The paper argues that sustainable funding, editorial capacity building, improved peer review, adoption of digital publishing technologies, adherence to publication ethics, international collaboration, enhanced visibility, and supportive national policies are essential for repositioning Nigerian journals to meet global publishing standards. Strengthening local journals will improve research dissemination, increase international visibility, support evidence-based policymaking, and promote national development.
